We Are Blood And Thunder By Kesia Lupo – A Review

We Are Blood And Thunder By Kesia Lupo – A Review

In a city where magic is feared and the dead are worshipped, life is overshadowed by a powerful and devastating storm cloud.

One young woman is running for her life. Another is trying to return home. Both are looking for a place where they belong.

But what Lena and Constance don’t realise is that the storm cloud binds them. Without it, neither can get what she desires.

Ahhhhh… I really wanted to love We Are Blood And Thunder. The cover, the synopsis, everything screamed YES! This is a book I will love and… I didn’t. I actually DNF’d this book at 274 pages. (DNF meaning Did Not Finish) There are around 400 in total so I was convinced I could just power through and force myself to read till the end but I just couldn’t.

The Characters and World Building

What character and world building? Honestly some of the characters I felt like I barely even knew. Especially the side characters like Winton and Xander. There really was not enough background on these kind of characters for me to truly understand their relationships with the main characters.

The world wasn’t really built on enough for me either. Sure, there is a map at the beginning of the book but more descriptive language throughout would have been really helpful. I couldn’t really place myself in my mind because I feel like I had nothing to go on.

The writing style and story.

The writing style was clear and easy to read which was nice. However the pacing was just all wrong for me. I like a book that is fast paced but this was too fast paced and slow at the same time. It felt rushed? Like everything just happens at once and then the next minute there’s a bunch of boring chapters about training and other such things which were so irrelevant to the story and could have just been axed completely.

The “twists” in this book were so predictable. None of them had me jaw-droppingly shocked at any point. I sort of just rolled my eyes like, of course. The ending is so obvious it actually hurts. Its so evident before you even open the book and start reading. You could look at the cover and title guess what “binds them” and BAM you have the “shock” ending of this book.

My overall star rating

I don’t mean to be overly negative, I really tried to love this book but I just didn’t like it. I do have some positives; The cover is beautiful! The writing style is easy to read and it’s a relatively short read.

I have never actually had to DNF a book before so this is a new experience for me. I feel terrible for not liking We Are Blood And Thunder, but I like to be honest about my thoughts and feelings.

Overall rating: ⭐⭐
