The Lost Sisters By Holly Black – A Review

The Lost Sisters By Holly Black – A Review

The Lost Sisters is a companion e-novella to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. If you have not read The Cruel Prince and want to avoid spoilers, I’d click away!

Sometimes the difference between a love story and a horror story is where the ending comes . . .

While Jude fought for power in the Court of Elfhame against the cruel Prince Cardan, her sister Taryn began to fall in love with the trickster, Locke.

The Characters and World Building

The character element is probably the most significant in this novella. It is specifically retelling the story of The Cruel Prince from the prospective of Taryn, Jude’s sister. I was really intrigued to see things from her point of view. That being said, I still strongly dislike her as a character! In fact, hearing her try to justify her problematic behaviour only heightened my aversion.

The world is mostly built up in The Cruel Prince. However, having this extra inside knowledge going into The Wicked King really helped me to feel part of the story. Much like a fly on the wall, evaluating everyone’s motives.

The Story Progression and Plot

The story progression that this e-novella provides is honestly amazing. My mind would be in a completely different place going on in the series if I had not read this. A lot of novellas don’t really offer much dynamic to the main story in a series, but The Lost Sisters really did that for me. I view certain characters completely differently now. I once thought Taryn to be such an innocent character, not anymore.

Saw this on Goodreads and it made me giggle!

Overall, if you are reading this series and haven’t stopped to quickly flip through the novella, do it. It’s super short but packs a huge punch!
