Captivating and action-packed, From Blood and Ash is a sexy, addictive, an unexpected fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa.
The Characters & World Building
*sigh* this was so close to being a DNF honestly. On this occasion I was suckered in by the hype and oh boy was it a disappointment. Let me start with the characters.
Poppy. I don’t understand this girl. She is supposedly sheltered, innocent, naive. But also at the same time desperately horny at all times and cannot follow basic instructions? To Poppy “no” means “HELL YEA!” and it was beyond frustrating to read.
The twist with her and her love interest (who I won’t name for the sake of not spoiling for anyone who wants to read it.) was so predictable. Their relationship is beyond the Valley of Toxic. Consent? Did he know her?? I don’t think he did! The sex scenes weren’t hot, erotic or sexy at all, they just felt… wrong?
I felt so out of touch with every part of From Blood and Ash. What is the Ascension? I have no idea. Where do the Ascended go? No clue. Why are they chosen? *shrugs* Why is there a Maiden? You know, the whole point of the book? Yea, I cannot answer a single one of these questions, least of all the last one. The book “hints” at vampires but its so painstakingly obvious from the first few deaths that the paranormal element to the plot didn’t even come as a surprise to me. Speaking of the plot, let’s talk about that…
The Plot & Story Progression
Why was the first 80% of the book so slow? Why did it take 400 pages to get to something that mattered? All the deaths up until that point feel meaningless because the side characters are so poorly written into the story. You can’t include a character in 2 scenes and then expect me to be sad when they die. Sorry! This book is meant to be a fantasy/romance but the romance really couldn’t have been further from that. I found it borderline abusive at points and quite frankly just cringe during others.
Final Thoughts & Rating
I know I know, I am brutally ripping From Blood and Ash to shreds but that’s because its just so shocking to me that so many people enjoyed it! This book is unfortunately going to be my first 1 star rating… I will usually give at least 2 but I honestly cannot find much to merit it on this occasion.
