Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series, City of Lost Souls.
The Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon. Welcome to my spoiler-free review of City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare. You can check out my review for the previous title, City of Fallen Angels, here.
The Characters and World Building
City of Lost Souls was a very gripping read for me. After City of Fallen Angels this was definitely a welcome change of pace. From the very beginning I was hooked by the events taking place, big and small. I am so emotionally invested in the characters and their relationships and stories that almost every perspective had me wanting to know more. The only scenes I started to lose interest in were the ones with Maia and Jordan. I just struggled to see the point in their random steamy scenes throughout the book?
That being said this book felt like one that was very focused on developing the relationships between characters. There was a lot of change on that front. I particularly like this aspect of stories so I enjoyed seeing romance blossom and bonds tested. It was interesting how Cassie had this huge plot point that all the characters were focused around and reading how it individually impacted each relationship.
The Story Progression and Plot
The overarching story for this instalment of TMI was really fascinating. From start to finish I was full of intrigue, wanting to see things unravel. The ending however felt a little bit lacklustre? I think I just wanted more from over 500 pages of build up. Though knowing there was still another book to come next I should have expected loose ends not to be completely tied. I can’t really say much more without delving into spoiler territory!
I rated City of Lost Souls 5 stars overall. The epilogue at the end left me an emotional wreck and I’m so excited to see how the series ends with City of Heavenly Fire.
